3D SECURE

Now shopping with cards is even safer

Cybercrime, identity theft and card fraud are all on the rise and a valid cause for concern. Our new authentication service, 3D Secure, adds a new dimension of 2nd level security to protect you when using your cards to shop online on all devices (desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile).

Currently, we’re using the well-known Verified by Visa 3D authentication tool, but in future, 3D Secure will be able to protect you while paying with both Visa and Mastercard.

This automatic service for all cardholders provides proof of your identity where your purchase does not require you to enter a PIN. It does not apply to payments made via the Ecobank mobile App or QR codes on EcobankPay.

How 3D Secure works:

When you pay for something online with your card, this will alert us to automatically send a One-Time Passcode (OTP) to the mobile number that we have on file for you. Enter the OTP on the Ecobank-branded webpage that appears to confirm your identity.

  1. Enter your card details online to pay for your purchase
  2. Check your mobile phone for your OTP
  3. Enter the OTP on the authentication screen and click “submit”
  4. Continue your purchase as normal.

Safety tips for using your card online

  • Only use your debit/credit card on websites you trust
  • Don't make online card purchases from public places
  • Protect your computer from viruses and hackers
  • Make sure the credit card entry page is secure – the browser's address bar should begin with "https://" and there should be a lock in the lower right corner

General Safety tips

  • Keep your PIN separate from your card (memorise it if possible)
  • Sign the back of your card as soon as card is received
  • Inform your bank/issuer when travelling abroad
  • Inform your bank/issuer immediately if your card is lost or stolen
  • Update the bank immediately if you change your contact details or address
  • Always ensure you know where your card is
  • Quickly report any unfamiliar card activity to the nearest branch or call our Contact Centre on 1399
