Culture & Ethics

We are proud to be pan-African

Our Values

To ensure our sustained success we have embedded the right ethics, culture, conduct and values into all our activities. These qualities form the foundations of our organisation and drive the right behaviours in every engagement that we have with our customers, colleagues, communities, shareholders, regulators and all other stakeholders.

In 2019, we carried out an independent survey across the Ecobank Group to identify areas for improvement and define a culture of trust and strong ethics. Six Core Values were derived (RACE IT – Respect, Accountability, Customer Centricity, Excellence, Integrity, Teamwork). These now represent our philosophy.

Our Pledge

The independent survey further led to the Pledge, a set of character traits articulating the way that all Ecobankers should behave.

  • I pledge to remain committed and to contribute selflessly to Ecobank. I am committed to the Pan-African purpose of Ecobank.
  • I work to make financial services accessible to all and to use it as an instrument to unlock Ecobank’s full potential in Africa.
  • I pledge to always uphold the highest standards of behaviour in the interest of customers, stakeholders, Ecobank and the communities we serve.
  • I manage Ecobank’s assets and resources prudently and am mindful of our responsibility to ensure the long-term stability of our bank.
  • I am always guided by the best interest of Ecobank, our customers, and partners. I never demand or accept payment for private gain.
  • I always treat my colleagues fairly and with respect. I embrace Ecobank’s diversity.
  • I champion the sharing of knowledge and learn from it.
  • I contribute my full self, with energy, transparency and accountability. I never place excessive demands on others.
  • I understand that living Ecobank’s culture is a shared responsibility and I will maintain the highest level of ethical behaviour. I therefore pledge to speak up with courage if I ever see anything that is not right.
  • I pledge to accept and welcome constructive criticism - whether from my peers, those I report to, those who report to me or those who I serve. This is how we become stronger and win as one.

Our Code of Conduct

Ecobankers are expected to uphold the Group’s Code of Conduct, all Ecobank policies, as well as laws and regulatory directives. We must:

  • Read, understand, and comply with the Code, as well as the policies, laws, and regulations that apply to each role and function in the bank
  • Speak up when we see possible or suspected violations of the Code
  • Ecobank policies, and legal and regulatory requirements
  • Be truthful and cooperate fully in any internal investigations
  • Not to conceal or destroy information
  • Complete training on the Code, and attest that we understand and commit to comply with the Code
  • Note that failing to read or attest to the Code does not excuse anyone from these responsibilities. Each staff member individually and collectively remains bound by the Code

The Code of Conduct applies to all directors, executives, employees and outsourced personnel of ETI and all affiliates and subsidiaries.

Whistleblowing

Whistleblowing aims to stop people feeling disempowered and demotivated, and provides them with the opportunity to challenge misconduct.

Building a culture of ‘speak up’ demands consistent communication with all employees which encourages whistle-blowing, informs them about the policy and lets them know how to make a disclosure, so that they can whistle-blow without fear of repercussions. Communication is regular, so that staff are reminded about the policy and procedures and newcomers are informed.

The Bank provides an independently monitored whistleblowing portal for staff and the general public, allowing them to report any unethical practices that they may witness or experience.
